Paper & Stone

The first thing I noticed about the stone was that it looked different every hour. Same object, same shelf, and by four in the afternoon it had become another thing entirely.

This series is an attempt to hold on to that. Six vessels, thrown quickly and left unglazed, photographed once an hour from sunrise to dusk against the same plaster wall.

Process

The clay is a local stoneware with a lot of grog in it, which is why the surfaces read as stone rather than pot. I fired them low so the colour would stay close to the raw material.

Nothing here is finished. That is mostly the point.

What I learned

• The shadow is more interesting than the object.
• Photographing at 1/4 the resolution you think you need is usually enough.
• Paper texture and stone texture are the same texture at different scales.
